Mooting the cause of ecological preservation and promoting the environment as its fundamental concern in all business activities, the Gujarat State Fertilisers and Chemicals Ltd (GSFC) has made conscious efforts to minimise waste, recycle and conserve natural resources. In recognition of the widespread initiatives taken by the company towards clean environment measures, the GSFC was awarded the SCOPE Meritorious Award 2008-09 for Environmental Excellence and Sustainable Development In New Delhi on April 10.

At the time of its inception in February 15, 1962, the GSFC was initiated as a single-minded joint sector company by the Gujarat Government with a resolve to offer quality products and services to farmers. Right since the production of its first fertilizer in 1967, the GSFC has made its mark in the area of ecological conservation as well.

The GSFC has now evolved into a multi-location, multi-plant, multi-product, multi-service and multi-crore company in the business of manufacturing fertilizers, petrochemicals, polymers and industrial gases.

Speaking to Bureaucracy Today, GSFC Managing Director (MD) Haribhai V. Patel said the achievement was extremely important for the company. “Green environment is of utmost importance to GSFC because we are primarily a chemical and fertilizer producing unit. Preservation and promotion of environment is the fundamental concern for GSFC in its day-to-day business activity and we have already achieved Zero Waste Discharge at the phosphatic group of plants. We have primarily strived to ensure that the practices we adopt translate into effective and long-lasting solutions and trees are a long-term solution to almost all environment-related issues”.

Here are a few initiatives taken by the GSFC towards waste minimisation, recycling and conservation of natural resources like raw materials water and energy to the maximum possible extent for environmental protection.
  • To generate green electricity and mitigate CO2 emissions, the GSFC has already commissioned a 22 MW windmill project to be carried out in a phased manner and has plans to further increase wind power production by adding new projects.
  • The company has also adopted Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) to undertake several projects for reduction of emissions, energy conservation and earn carbon credits.
  • Set up a huge green belt (105 Ha) within GSFC premises, in line with the CDM initiative.
  • Undertook a widespread tree plantation in order to contribute to the environment of Vadodara.
  • Keeping in mind its long-term impact on the environment we planted about one lakh trees, mainly Banyan, during 2009.
  • Undertook landscaping for the green and clean ambience in the factory area and has also set up a Lotus pond with ducks right in the middle of the factory area.
  • Recycled the sewage generated from the township and used it for horticulture.
  • As part of its corporate commitment towards the environment, the GSFC constructed a total of 13 rain water harvesting structures with a total recharging capacity of 15 crore litres.
Additionally, four ponds have been constructed for supplementary rain water recharging.

Keeping pace with its commitment for good market leaders in the areas of Environment, Health and Safety (EHS), the GSFC has also obtained ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and BS OHSAS 18001 and has also been handed the RC Logo in 2008.

The GSFC surpassed all its previous records by achieving the highest ever-net sales, which went up to Rs.5880.80 crores in the financial year 2008-09. The company remains positive about its outlook for the current financial year as well. During the first quarter of 2010, the company achieved its highest ever production of fertilisers as compared to the corresponding quarters of the last five years.
