o people’s hearts with their philosophy Making a meaningful difference in people’s lives and bagged the coveted SCOPE Meritorious Award for Corporate Social Responsibility & Responsiveness in New Delhi this year. And it seems that CSR for the Public sector is not just an add-on, but a perfect blend of commerce and societal commitment. SK Roongta , Chairman, SAIL, during his speech on the occasion on April 10 said, “The main objective of PSUs should be unlocking the potential that already exists. Excellence is people-centric and if the organization is sick, then that means the people are unwell in every aspect.” The SAIL has played a crucial role and made its presence felt almost in all sectors since its foundation which include education, health, improved water resources, women empowerment, sports, environment, preservation of art and culture and much more. It was the first PSU to work towards generating awareness on AIDS.
Here is a lowdown of SAIL’s CSR initiatives.
- SAIL has adopted 79 villages (known as Model Steel villages) in eight states including West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar to improve the conditions of the areas and make them a better place to live in. Work at 46 villages has already been completed.
- For the first time, six special schools have been set up for the economically backward children at integrated steel plant locations.
- SAIL has provided assistance to over 1,119 schools with more than 1, 11, 958 students of around 435 villages surrounding its units.
- Special focus has been given to the health sector as health camps have been set up at steel plants for giving free medical care to the underprivileged.
- SAIL has established 61 Primary Heath Centres, eight Reproductive and Child Health Centres, 18 hospitals and six Super Specialty Hospitals to provide
specialized health care to 26.7 million people. - It has installed 4714 water resources thereby giving drinking water to more than 37 lakh people.
- It generated revenue for the employment of deprived women in all steel plants.
- SAIL has actively associated itself with the commitment of climate change initiative.
- Air emission reduced to the lowest ever level of 1.6kg/tcs, a reduction of27% in FY’09.
- In sports, SAIL has offered aid to Sushil Kumar, who got accolades after winning a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics.
- Working towards preservation of culture and heritage.
