Letters to the Editor

I expect this website to be bold enough, transparent ,and politically unbiased ! It must stand out a mile away from several other similar websites. It must have the courage of conviction to expose the corrupt practices rampant in the Central government departments ,public sector -industrial units, banking institutions local bodies etc. After having served the GOI for over 35 years including Director of Estates, Joint Secy( DOP&T),Secretary (PESB) etc ,I am witness to corrupt practices from a close quarter particularly in matters of senior appointments ,which are mere farce! Merit , as always, takes a back seat . Let this website take the initiative and expose ,not only the proverbial tip of the ice-berg but the whole iceberg itself ! My best wishes for its grand success.Amen A K SAXENA ( A retired civil servant)

My best wishes to Suhaib Ilyasi Editor-in-chief, of the website. and the print magazine. On my retirement as Joint Secretary from the GOI , may I take the opportunity of contributing my views on several burning issues facing the country today. The foremost being 'Corruption' and lack of good governance in the GOI. I would like to be guided by you through e-mail.

A refreshing and thoughtful piece of writing Suhaib. I sincerely wish more people in this world would realize that by silencing truth we only ruin our tomorrow. We should be thankful to our 'Canaries' & whistle blowers for taking the trouble to try and clean up muck for us by bringing the filth in every ones focus. Thanks a ton for having the courage of conviction to come out in support of all the truth speakers & seekers!

I have gone through Sujata's all the poems under Malika series. She has identified the problems at the source and also the deep trauma as the impact . Her expression is very simple but having the uncompromising strength of protest. Her poems assure us that the night will definitely be over and we all will see the new dawn which will not be the repetition of yesterdays and yesteryears. She gives us the strength to hope because I think the poet Sujate looks at the beauties of life. I feel indebted to her for her Malika Series. Wishing her more success in life.

In these days when aping the west is so common its wonderful to come across someone who is still in touch with our rich cultural heritage, our roots and is inspired by problems of women in particular to write her poems. Kudos to Sujata and may her tribe increase. We are proud to have someone like her in the Indian Bureaucracy!!!

"I am extremely happy to learn that a mega news portal www.bureaucracytoday.com is being launched. This will provide a forum for exchange of thoughts not only among the bureaucrats but also among the people who are interested and are affected by performance of the bureaucracy. As you know the entire administrative system is facing serious challenges from many quarters. The print and the electronic media is looking for a scam every day. The recent incidents of an MLA killing an Executive Engineer in Uttar Pradesh is an indication of the problems being faced by officials working in the districts.

Inspite of these problems many officials have been trying to improve the system by innovative schemes and ideas. I am sure your portal will be useful and popular."

"I am glad to learn about the launch of Bureaucray today.com. I convey my blessings and wish all success to this new venture.

Though we are well past half a century after our Independence, the Common main is not aware of the bureaucratic activities that are happening in the country. Every Citizen has a right to know of all the governmental activities. Sadly, there is no effective mechanism which enables the common man to know all aspects of the bureaucratical activities. I hope bureaucracytoday.com will create a new forum for exchange of information of all aspects of bureaucracy and will function without any bias to anybody.

I once again wish all success to bureaucraytoday.com"

Tamil Nadu "On 11th December, 1948, the IAS probationers of 1948 batch had the privilege of being addressed by the Home Minister Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel. He advised us : “Give your best to the country, which has given you a prestigious job with full security. You should render service to the public with rectitude in a fair and polite manner. You are bound to succeed”.

These words summarize the expectations people have from our civil services even today if one seeks undue favours. He will have to bow down before the unscrupulous. He should be able to keep his head high, while serving the people, in the complex environment of present-day challenges.

Service for the poor and needy should be guiding motto."

"The government is mounted on the machinery of administration. The vehicle is so conceived and constructed as to keep on moving inspite of the other tow limbs of the state, namely the judiciary and the legislatue. Of the three wings of the government the executive is sandwiches between the other two to ensure smooth flwo of the governance, even in the face turmoil geophysical or political. Indian bureaucracy is know as the steel frame of administration.

After the dawn of freedom, the steel frame has mellowed down to one of peoples' body with a human face. The old stigma, as the stooge of the British has given place to that of Responsible and Responsive and Respectable Instrument of governance.

The coveted Civil service is a form of penance for the honest officers. Their Mantra is "Service to humanity is service to the God" Honest officers take in do not run after the seat of power for plum posts. Usually they hand over charge to their successors in leass than a minute with a guidance note to the new incumbent. They also join in the new post on the very next day. Very rarely they avail joining time unless in need.

The life of a civil serant can be akin to that of a renunciant, with neither liking nor dislike for the assignment. I have known a few men who have occupied posts of the highest and the lowest values with calm and composure as God given.

Civil service has to be kept above wants like the defence. I have known two officers of All India Service. One rose up to The Principal secretary grade. Has possession of dress was only two sets. He would himself wash and dry onset and wear pressing it himself, while the other would be waiting to serve this wonderful gentlemen. He was a very good friend to mine. Even if I offered my own meal sent to me for lunch he would politely thank and be satisfied with two loaves of bread.

There was another young officer. He retired as a bachelor. He was related to me distantly. I offered to find a bride for him. Quick cam his repertoire. " I am too poor to maintain a family". He retired as a bachelor. Inspite of sterling qualities he was not a popular officer, because of his uncompromising attitude, while another officer who retired as a bachelor led a princely life and was a popular bureaucrat.

To don the mantle of a bureaucrat one should have performed penance in his past."
